Therapy Team

Isabel Gutierrez, Trauma Therapy Intern & Social Worker

Hailing from the vibrant state of Arizona, my roots have instilled in me a strong connection to my cultural heritage and nature. My upbringing, influenced by Mexican values and traditions, has shaped my commitment to community, healing, empathy, and forming connections.

I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Journalism, and I am currently in the second year of my Master’s program in Social Work and working on a Graduate Certificate in Advance Clinical Behavioral Health at Colorado State University here in Fort Collins.

During my undergraduate years, I had a passion for authentic human connection that led me to an internship with a nonprofit in Orlando, FL that aimed to support at-risk youth through action sports, creative art, and education. There, I saw a community working to help underprivileged youth build self-esteem, self-respect, and self-confidence. This was a pivotal experience that ignited the desire to do more than just communication applications for nonprofits; It sparked my aspiration to develop programs that directly engage with individuals, fostering genuine connections and driving meaningful change.

Since then, I worked as an Inclusion Aide for the City of Fort Collins, where I had the privilege of working alongside youths and adults with a diverse range of abilities and support needs. My purpose? Empowering them to embrace life's challenges, set goals, and actively participate in group activities. As an after-school art teacher, I have unlocked the creative potential of young minds. The ability to motivate and inspire youth to explore the world of art, express their emotions, and embrace the learning journey has been a transformative experience for students. I believe in the power of art as a medium for self-expression, self-discovery, and empathy. I also served as a Graduate Success Assistant, providing individual support and mentorship to referred undergraduate students. I tailored learning plans, offered academic guidance, and helped students access resources for everyday needs such as childcare programs, transportation, and navigating healthcare for DACA students. My dedication to the academic success of my mentees has been instrumental in helping students achieve their educational and personal life goals.

My journey from journalism to social work embodies my commitment to personal growth and embracing new challenges through change. My main interests are in trauma therapy with art, yoga, and mindfulness. With Hope Roots' support, I will be trained in EMDR therapy (Fall 2023) and plan to pursue training in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and auricular acudetox. At Hope Roots, I will be offering trauma-informed case management and trauma therapy for individuals and groups. I am interested in working with groups using art & creative processes to explore mind, body, and soul through expressing abstract ideas and emotions for healing. Previous art experience is not necessary.

Dorinna Ruh, LCSW, Clinical Supervisor & Trainer

I  became a counselor in 1989, working in the substance abuse field. I obtained my alcoholism counselor credential in 1991 in New York.  I obtained my Master’s Degree in Social Work from the State University of New York in 1995.

I have a license in  Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).  I started private practice in 2000. After being trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in 2001, I became both certified in and an approved consultant in EMDR. For the past 5 years I have facilitated EMDR trainings for HAP/Trauma recovery. I am a co-founder and regional coordinator for the Northern Colorado EMDR Network and have co-hosted both Joanne Twombly and Jim Knipe, presenting two-day EMDR trainings in Northern Colorado.  I am also an EMDR training facilitator for HAP/Trauma Recovery. I specialize in treating complex trauma and dissociation with the adult population.

In addition to my training in EMDR therapy, I have training in cognitive therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and Internal Family Systems.  I weave all of these therapies into my work.

Training and consultation for other therapists is a large part of my practice. I have been offering mini-trainings and lectures in the professional community for over 10 years, and these presentations have all been well received. I have approval to offer EMDRIA credit for three different trainings I facilitate, ABCs of EMDR and Dissociation , Weaving in Interweaves, and EMDR Tune Up.

At Hope Roots, I offer clinical supervision for practicum and internship students and offer training opportunities for trauma therapists - especially geared towards helping ensure that clients with cPTSD and dissociative disorders do not slip through the cracks.

Jenna Bockey, Trauma Therapy Practicum Student

To live our fullest life, we need to process and let go of the thoughts, feelings, and negative life events that hold us back. There are many emotions that can arise through life’s challenges, and it is easy to hold onto things until they become too much. A yoga teacher once told me “Our mental becomes our physical,” meaning that if we fail to process our mental unease, it can manifest as physical pain, illness, and disease within the body. I am here to help you to process and move forward from the pain your body and mind are holding onto.

I am a Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s student at the University of Northern Colorado, with an academic and professional background in landscape architecture and yoga. I obtained a certification in yoga instruction in 2017, and have volunteered at equine therapy facilities working with at-risk youth for many years. My inspiration is drawn from the outdoors, animals, and the profound joy of helping people connect with their true, authentic, and vibrant nature.

In my therapeutic approach, I integrate various modalities including somatic approaches for nervous system regulation, parts-work to foster congruency within the protective and wounded inner parts of yourself, and trauma-informed yoga to reinforce the mind-body connection while quieting the mind. Currently pursuing training in EMDR therapy, I am dedicated to guiding clients through the reprocessing of memories, facilitating a return to a sense of safety within themselves.

Sarah Joseph, LPC, NCC, Director & Trauma Therapist

I have experience in helping clients develop a mind-body connection - learning how stress, trauma, and emotions are felt and held in the body.  My approach allows the client freedom to explore how their nervous system has adapted to handle trauma and stress throughout their lifetime. This awareness leads to healing and helps facilitate trauma reprocessing.  I use EMDR therapy to help clients process the residual imprints of trauma that often cause anxiety, depression, anger issues, and chronic health problems.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Masters in Counseling. I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state of Colorado. I am trained in EMDR therapy and trauma-sensitive yoga, and I am pursuing training in Neurofeedback Therapy and Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy. My main clinical interests are in trauma therapy, attachment-focused therapy, parts work, yoga & mindfulness interventions, Neurofeedback & neuro-counseling, psychodrama, grief, anger, and stress-related illness.

At a retreat in India in 2005, a lecture on ahimsa (non-violence) sparked an interest in yoga philosophy and mental health. I later became trained in trauma-sensitive yoga, which ignited my lifelong interest in psychology and counseling into a desire to become a professional trauma therapist. I have lived in rural ranching communities in Wyoming, downtown San Francisco, and North India. This diverse experience means that I am comfortable relating with people from many different cultures and backgrounds. I believe that spirituality can help clients make meaning of their pain and find resources for life-long healing and growth. I can provide therapy in English and/or in Hindi.

I am based in Northern Colorado but I spent over 10 years of my adult life living and working in India. I am the founder and board chair of Hope Roots. Since relocating to Colorado in 2019, I also work as the project coordinator for the Northern Colorado Human Trafficking Symposium.
